![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for writing such a well constructed query. It’s smart of you to get in touch about your essay & I hope it goes well. That’s probably worth some good marks & has the additional merit of being true, I think. ![]() It might help in your ISU if you said that my inner conflict about identity and belonging is reflected in the dual narrative structure of the book. And there’s a negative side, in that I feel I will only ever half-understand where people are coming from. There’s a very positive side to that: it means I don’t feel possessive about country or nationality or place, and I don’t get attached to anything except people. The truth is that I probably don’t belong – probably never belonged – in West Africa either. That enduring sense of dislocation, of being an observer rather than a full participant, is probably the way it affected me as a person. I didn’t enjoy moving to England & felt like an outsider, which is a feeling that has never completely passed. ![]() It was a very happy place in the part of the city where we lived. There was a lot of life in the streets – a lot of food and music. We lived in Douala, in what was called French Cameroun, and I spoke French at school & with school friends. The place and the people are my first memories. Yes, I had my early childhood in Cameroon – we lived there from when I was 6 weeks to 7 years old. Hi Ben, thank you for reading Little Bee. ![]()

![]() ![]() The book was called obscene and tasteless, and Whitman was chastised for verse that seemed to describe a multitude of sexual proclivities - many condemned by society at the time. Other reviewers, however, were not as kind to the book and focused on its sexual themes. He wrote the initial edition of the book in the early 1850's and published it in 1855 to several glowing reviews from literary titans such as Ralph Waldo Emerson. Whitman first began writing Leaves of Grass after failed attempts at newspaper publishing and teaching. ![]() His "songs" are songs of democracy and freedom, of an unwavering belief in patriotism, and of the promise of American freedom. Whitman first began writing Leaves just seventy-five years after the American Revolution and only several decades after the formative political administrations that first shaped the country. On another level, it is a song of and for America. He writes of the spiritual nature of his path and his experiences of war, peace, love, and death. First, it is Whitman's own chronicle of his journey through eighteenth century America. As one scholar has noted, Leaves of Grass has undergone more than a century of "abuse and worship." Its greatness has been the topic of much debate for over 150 years. Yet other critics have found the work obscene. Leaves of Grass has been considered by many critics to be the first and best example of American poetry, and Whitman to have been the first major American poet. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ambrose served as a board member for the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center Foundation in Great Falls. Once it does, the results are a little dismaying for those of us hooked on sending postcards: mail hasn’t been delivered for years, and mostly lies around in heaps in the building, threatening avalanches and blocking off rooms. Going Postal's main character is Moist van Lipwig, a con artist given the “option” of turning over a new leaf and breathing life back in Ankh-Morpork’s postal service, which means we start the book with his “execution”, and it takes a while to get round to the post office part. As promised, I picked up Sir Terry Pratchett's Going Postal, a book from his Discworld series which stands alone.
